Be Fruitful - Prison Fellowship
Be Fruitful - Prison Fellowship:
"A new book by Steve and Candice Watters, the creators of Focus on the Family’s Boundless webzine, broaches a subject that makes some blush. The title says it clearly enough: Start Your Family.
With the average marrying age increasing, and adults devoting more energy in their 20s and 30s to their careers, some couples are, as the Watters say, “pushing snooze on the biological clock.”
The result, they warn, is that “by the time the average couple tries to have kids... they are often surprised to find they are already moving past the peak of their fertile years.” In fact, a U.S. Census Bureau study found that the proportion of 40-something women who were childless and unlikely ever to have children doubled between 1976 and 2000."
I'm so glad this book was written! Please finish the short review at the linked title above.

Saving Yourself for Marriage
Sadly, you'll notice the singles who comment think this is extreme. I can't make it through registration to comment, but I'd like to ask them if this is Christ's attitude toward the Church, that it's okay to flirt around with idols while telling yourself that you'll be loyal when your actually married at some point in the future? After all, being too committed to Christ makes you look extreme!
Saving Yourself for Marriage:
"You may think I'm only talking about sex or physical purity. But I'm not. There's a lot more you can save for your spouse, if that's what you choose.
I used to struggle with the idea of saving sex for my spouse. I knew it was the right thing to do, but I couldn't help but think I was missing out. I was, but it would have been only a temporary sacrifice that would have turned into a priceless investment."

The Chalcedon Foundation - Faith for All of Life
Good wee word study on meekness.
The Chalcedon Foundation - Faith for All of Life:
"In today’s world, the stereotype of a good Christian is someone who is reserved, unassuming, and would not hurt a fly. This “meekness” is very different from how Jesus uses the term in Matthew 5:5.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth."

Keynes Knew It
"Lenin is said to have declared that the best way to destroy the capitalist system was to debauch the currency. By a continuing process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens. By this method they not only confiscate, but they confiscate arbitrarily; and, while the process impoverishes many, it actually enriches some… Lenin was certainly right. There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose."

The Dark Underside of Abortion
The Dark Underside of Abortion
-
Probe Ministries
"Crisis pregnancy counselor Dr. Julie Parton says that almost as often, the pressure comes from parents, especially Christian parents."
The risks associated with abortion are not reported in the news, In fact, the media denies or ignores them. This article lists them.
"Death – Women who abort are approximately four times more likely to die in the following year than women who carry their pregnancies to term."

"'They’ve seen too many of their colleagues lose grant funding when they haven’t gone along with the so-called political consensus that we’re in a human-caused global warming,' Schmitt said."
and
Schmitt resigned after the group blamed global warming on human activity. In his resignation letter, the 74-year-old geologist argued that the "global warming scare is being used as a political tool to increase government control over American lives, incomes and decision making."
Interesting, interesting.

Humility and Glory
Humility and Glory at Quiddity:
"So we don’t want our students to become proud, but the solution is not ignorance. In fact, I want to suggest that I, at least, have misunderstood pride and humility all my life."
Something to really think about when you see haughtiness in your children.

Another Observation on Latin
"Four years of high-school Latin would dramatically arrest the decline in American education. In particular, such instruction would do more for minority youths than all the ‘role model’ diversity sermons on Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Montezuma, and Caesar Chavez put together. Nothing so enriches the vocabulary, so instructs about English grammar and syntax, so creates a discipline of the mind, an elegance of expression, and serves as a gateway to the thinking and values of Western civilization as mastery of a page of Virgil or Livy (except perhaps Sophocles’s Antigone in Greek or Thucydides’ dialogue at Melos). After some 20 years of teaching mostly minority youth Greek, Latin, and ancient history and literature in translation (1984-2004), I came to the unfortunate conclusion that ethnic studies, women studies—indeed, anything “studies”— were perhaps the fruits of some evil plot dreamed up by illiberal white separatists to ensure that poor minority students in the public schools and universities were offered only a third-rate education."
